Patent Attorney and Founder

Hey everyone! Ever wondered how to build a prototype without spending a fortune? Let’s break it down.

I’m JD Houvener, patent attorney and founder of Bold Patents Law Firm. I’ve worked with over 500 inventors and wrote Bold Ideas: The Inventor’s Guide to Patents to help people like you.

Before we jump in, grab the Bold Inventor Kit below. It’s packed with resources on patent searches, applications, and monetizing inventions. Now, let’s get to it.

Budget-Friendly Prototyping

You don’t need deep pockets to bring your idea to life. Here are three simple ways to get started:

  1. 3D Printing
    • 3D printing has become super affordable. You can create models for under $20!
    • Free software like TinkerCAD and Fusion 360 lets you design before printing.
    • No printer? No problem. Services like Xometry and Shapeways can print and ship your design.
  2. DIY with Hardware Store Supplies
    • Head to Home Depot and grab materials like PVC, wood, or metal.
    • This is a great way to test your idea without custom engineering.
  3. Foam or Cardboard Models
    • Need a quick, cheap way to visualize your invention? Use cardboard, foam, or clay.
    • Perfect for early brainstorming and feedback.

Adding Electronics?

For tech-based inventions, Arduino and Raspberry Pi are great, low-cost options to test circuits and programming.

Protect Your Idea

Be careful who you share your idea with. The second you disclose it, a one-year countdown begins. If you don’t file a patent in time, you might lose your rights.

  • Always use a confidentiality agreement before discussing your invention.
  • Avoid public disclosures before filing a patent.

Do You Need a Prototype to Get a Patent?

Nope. A working model isn’t required—just a clear description and drawings. If your invention is big or expensive, don’t wait until you build it. File your patent early.

I hope this helps! Start small, keep it simple, and move forward with confidence.
