As a city known more for its beaches rather than its small business owners, Miami isn’t often regarded as a place for entrepreneurship to thrive in. However, as proud supporters of Miami’s brave and bold underdogs, we at Bold Patents recognize the potential that this city has to offer. That is why we created this short guide to opening a business in Miami.

Whether you’re looking to start a business from scratch or open up a new one, here are our top 23 resources for inventors and entrepreneurs in Miami

Universities

University of Miami

Imagine a medium-sized, private research university that consistently excels in both academic and athletic arenas. Now imagine it as a place where you can learn how to become both a marine-biologist and the (potential) proud owner of your very own business. Combined with a bit of diversity and VR technology and what you have is an exact picture of how the University of Miami can help YOU succeed in and outside of the classroom!

Since 1925, this school has helped its students succeed by offering innovative dual-degree programs such as Fellows in Latin American Studies and places to practice their newfound entrepreneurial skills such as hospitals located in the Miami Health District and the university’s very own innovation center

For those who are interested in science, business, and technology, this university is considered one of the very best places to take your skills there. This is especially true if you’re new to the world of entrepreneurship and don’t know where exactly to start off at.

Florida International University

From the top of the globe to the ocean’s floor, Florida International University(FIU) has helped its students achieve success in and outside the classroom by providing its students with “Worlds Ahead opportunities” such as study abroad trips to China and internships at any of their three museums: Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, the Wolfsonian – FIU, and the Jewish Museum of Florida

Originally an abandoned airstrip, FIU ultimately developed into, “a leading cultural institution” where innovation thrives and solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems (rise in sea levels, childhood mental disorders, and much more) are just about on the rise.

Just recently, the National Science Foundation awarded the university $1 million to train policy scientists in cyberinfrastructure

For those who are looking for a school that offers its students more than new athletic uniforms and fancy technology, FIU is considered one of the top schools to go to.

Did we mention that it’s also the only public university in South Florida to be deemed a Carnegie Very High Research institution?

Offices for Small Businesses

US Small Business Administration, Miami

We mentioned this organization a number of times in some of our previous articles such as our business resources in Seattle and Houston articles, but for those of you who don’t know already, the US Small Business Administration (SBA) is a government-run facility that offers information on small business loans, grants, bonds, and other financial assistance.

As the nation’s, “only go-to resource and voice for small businesses” since 1953, it has been the only cabinet-level federal agency fully dedicated to providing counseling, capital, and contracting expertise to small businesses.

While SBA does not make loans directly, they can help you find a local lender who can help you with your loan application.

Here in Miami, the SBA offers a plethora of resources to anyone looking to start a business. For those looking to market their businesses, the SBA, along with their partner, SCORE, will be offering a session on email and social media marketing on October 1st, 2019 from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm EDT. The cost is $35 per person.

Let’s face it, in an economy where people are forced to “spend money in order to make money,” it can be very frustrating for inventors to get their product to market. That’s where Patent Pro Bono.

Created with the assistance of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and in collaboration with firms and attorneys throughout Florida, Patent Pro Bono FL is a statewide program created by the Arts & Business Council of Miami that provides inventors and other creative people with free pro bono patent attorneys.
