If you’re an inventor, entrepreneur, or small business owner in Albuquerque, you’re in a great spot.
There’s real energy here, from startups building with AI to biotech companies making big moves in healthcare. And if you’re just starting out with a new idea, that first step can feel huge. That’s where we come in.
I’m JD Houvener, patent attorney and founder at Bold Patents. We help inventors protect their ideas and build something real, through patents, trademarks, and practical legal advice.
Today, I want to share five local resources right here in Albuquerque that can give your invention or startup the boost it needs:
1. ABQID
A startup accelerator in the heart of the city. If your idea is still early-stage and you need mentorship, funding opportunities, or business guidance, ABQID is worth looking into. You’ll have to apply, but if you get in, you’ll work closely with experts who’ve done this before.
One cool company that came through here? RS21, a data analytics firm using AI to make sense of real-world problems.
2. The BioScience Center
Focused on life sciences and biotech, this incubator is perfect if you’re working on pharmaceuticals or medical devices.
They offer lab space, help with clinical trials, and even support navigating FDA approval, which, let’s be honest, is a maze.
A standout success here is Circular Genomics, a startup using circular RNA to create tools for diagnosing brain disorders.
This one’s grassroots, hands-on, and full of other innovators like you.
3. WESST Enterprise Center
Think of it as a coworking space, but with structure.
Located downtown, this 37,000-square-foot center supports tech companies, manufacturers, and service businesses.
You’ll meet other founders, share ideas, and get honest advice.
One startup from WESST? AdMe Inc. built a smart point-of-sale system with loyalty tools for restaurants.
4. FatPipe NM
Great name, right?
This incubator and coworking space downtown has everything: fast internet, office furniture, multimedia tools, and, most importantly, mentors.
It reminds me of my time in Seattle, where seasoned business owners showed up to help new founders.
One company born here is Parito Powder, a clean energy startup developing catalysts for hydrogen fuel cells. Green tech, made right here in town.
5. CNM STEMulus Center
This one’s for all the science and tech builders out there.
It’s a training and accelerator program run through CNM (Central New Mexico Community College), offering mentorship and support for STEM-focused startups.
One standout? Aqua Membranes, using 3D printing to improve water filtration and cut energy use. Simple idea, big impact.
If you’re working on something new and need help protecting it, let’s talk.
