Patent Attorney and Founder

Hey there, Indianapolis inventors and entrepreneurs 👋

I’m JD Houvener, founder of Bold Patents. Thanks for stopping by. If you’ve got an idea, a product, a brand, or even a whole company brewing, and you’re not sure how to protect it, you’re in the right place.

Patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, we help with all of it. But today, I want to go a step further and share something more personal.

Starting something new can be exciting. It can also feel overwhelming, especially if you’re doing it alone.

So here’s my gift to you:
My top 5 resources for launching and growing your business in Indianapolis. These are places I’d recommend to a close friend or family member.

Let’s dive in:

1. TechPoint
This nonprofit is the beating heart of Indiana’s tech scene. They support founders with mentorship, awards (like the Mira Awards), startup programs, and even a competitive internship pipeline. Big names like ExactTarget and ClusterTruck started here. If you’re a tech founder, check them out.

2. The Startup Ladies
This group is all about women in business. Whether you’re an inventor, investor, or executive, they’ve built a space to grow, with workshops, networking, and guidance in areas like marketing, taxes, legal, and more. It’s a powerful community for women ready to launch.

3. Purdue Research Park
Backed by Purdue University, this incubator connects inventors with serious resources, research support, business coaching, grant access, and more. If you’re early stage and need help building the business side of your invention, this is worth a look.

4. Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI)
If you’re in life sciences or biotech, IBRI is a goldmine. Located in the 16 Tech district, it’s focused on metabolic diseases like diabetes and helps move science from lab to real-world treatments. MBX Biosciences grew out of here, they’re now developing clinical-stage therapies.

5. 16 Tech Innovation District
This 50-acre downtown hub is built for collaboration. Think co-working spaces, labs, event venues, all designed to bring innovators together. Sometimes, just being around other founders can spark your next big move.

One more thing,
Co-working spaces (like those at 16 Tech) are worth it. Even if it costs a bit, the chance to work around other startups, bounce ideas off each other, and not feel isolated? That’s huge.

But quick warning ⚠️
If you’ve got an invention that’s not protected yet, be careful about sharing too soon. Don’t risk losing your rights.
