Hey there, inventors and entrepreneurs!
Welcome to the Baltimore hub of Bold Patents. I’m JD Houvener, founder, patent attorney, and fellow big-idea nerd. If you’re building something new and bold, Baltimore has a ton of resources to help you do it. I’ve rounded up five of my favorites right here in the city.
These aren’t just any programs. They’re hands-on, community-focused, and full of people who’ve been where you are. Whether you’re just sketching out your idea or already pitching investors, these spots can help you level up.
Let’s jump in:
1. Conscious Venture Lab
This place blends startup energy with social impact. Think profit meets purpose.
It’s more than just office space, it’s a full-on support network. They’ve got an accelerator for early-stage companies, help with funding, and a tight-knit group of founders who are ready to share what they’ve learned.
One standout company that came out of Conscious? Fearless, a software development group focused on building tech that actually improves lives.
2. FastForward (Backed by Johns Hopkins)
This one’s perfect if you’re in the tech or biotech space. FastForward offers:
- Office space
- Mentorship
- Hands-on training for first-time founders
They also help connect you with attorneys, CPAs, and other pros you’ll need as your company grows. One company that launched from here is Sonavex, which makes ultrasound tools to help surgeons get better results in the OR.
3. bwtech@UMBC
Located at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, this tech park leans academic, but don’t let that scare you off.
If you’re interested in licensing research from universities, this is the place to look. You can turn that tech into your own startup.
One success story? AirPhoton makes high-tech air quality monitors and was recently named one of the top tech products in the country.
4. StarTUp at the Armory (Towson University)
Towson built out this cool space in an old armory building. They run an 8-week startup fellowship that’s open to everyone, not just Towson students or alumni.
If you’re accepted, you’ll work alongside other founders, share resources, and push your ideas forward fast.
One company that came out of the Armory? Mindgrub Technologies. They build custom websites, apps, and run digital marketing for businesses of all sizes.
5. UpSurge Baltimore
UpSurge wants Baltimore to be the first EquiCity, a tech hub that’s truly diverse and inclusive. They’re all about lifting up underrepresented founders and building a startup scene that reflects everyone.
One of their success stories is Alloy Sports, a company that lets users create and test their own sports betting strategies through custom software.
That’s a quick tour of five incredible launchpads for innovators right here in Baltimore.
If you’re working on an invention, or you’ve already got one, you’re in the right place. Bold Patents is here to help with patents, trademarks, and everything in between.
