Hi, I’m J.D. Houvener and welcome to the Bold Today Show, where you, the inventor and entrepreneur, get your daily dose of inspiration to help you make the world a better place. Today is Susan B Anthony’s birthday, and while that name might be familiar to you and you might think of a dollar coin from back in history, Susan B Anthony had a major impact. So, today I want you to think about history, and the challenge for you is to think about your industry. What area of technology are you innovating in? Think about who the forefathers were for that technology and thank them. Thank them for the platform that you stand on and innovate on today. Go do that now.
For Susan B Anthony, her biggest claim to fame was the anti-slavery movement and women’s rights. One of the biggest things about women’s rights, of course, is in 1920 they got the right to vote – women. That’s a huge accomplishment, the 19th amendment. So today, we’re gonna look at a voting patent from way back in 1881. I love these old patents; you can take a look at it here. These patents are interesting because they have the same types of drawings that we put forward today. Almost 200 years, patent drawings haven’t changed that much. If you take a close look at this drawing, there are dashed lines, solid lines, numerical outlines that actually point to different aspects of the invention. These call-outs are the same requirements that have to be done for today’s patent drawings. So have a look at this voting mechanism, which actually standardized the way that you can vote and eliminated the need for handwritten voting cards back in the 1800s.
Today’s challenge, as I mentioned earlier, about going back in history, I want you to work with someone else, think about their industry, have them talk about who their forefathers are, their famous, interesting paths. Think about who they think of as an inspiration that’s making their technology move forward. It’ll help you think about who yours might be and how you’re going to move your technology into the market differently than anyone else.
