Hey there. Welcome to the Bold Patents Lab – Texas page.
If you’re here, you’re likely an inventor or a founder with a new idea. And that can feel lonely at times. But you’re not on your own here in Lubbock. There are plenty of places where you can meet other people who are building things, testing ideas, or trying to get a product off the ground.
I’m JD Houvener, owner and patent attorney here at Bold Patents. I want to share a short list of five local spots that can help you learn, grow, and meet the right people.
1. Texas Tech Innovation Hub at Research Park
This is the main spot for founders in town. It’s the go-to place for new ideas, early-stage projects, and team support. You’ll find co-working space, mentors, workshops, and people who understand what it’s like to build from scratch. Drop by once a week if you can. Have coffee with someone who is a step ahead of you. You’ll pick up small things that save you time and money.
A bonus here is the link to Texas Tech itself. You may be able to work with research teams or professors through the tech transfer office. Some inventors even get support from the school to help with research at no cost, as long as the school can keep learning from the tech while you move forward in the market.
2. Texas Tech Accelerator
This is a one-year program for young startups. Before you apply, make sure your base is set. Form your company. Talk with a business lawyer. And please file your patent or at least reach patent-pending first. Once you’re ready, this program can offer a bit of early funding and steady guidance through the year.
3. Small Business Development Center (SBDC)
This one is free. Yes, free. The SBDC is funded by the federal government, and every state has one. Lubbock hosts a great center right here at Texas Tech. You’ll get help with business plans, early growth steps, and general guidance. It’s a simple way to get advice without any cost.
4. SCORE
SCORE is another free mentor group. Many of the mentors are retired leaders who want to help new founders. They can walk you through basic planning, hiring help, or shaping your first sales plan. It’s a relaxed place to ask questions you might not want to ask in public.
5. The Local Startup Scene
Lubbock has more going on than most folks think. There are over 200 tech firms here now, along with a low cost of living and strong support from the university. A few well-known startups began here, companies working in farming tech, clean energy, health, and even robotics. Delta Robotics, for example, built its early tech right here before growing past it.
There’s real movement in this city. Don’t miss out on it.
