Hey everyone. Welcome to the Bold Patents Bakersfield page.

I’m JD Houvener, founder and patent attorney at Bold Patents.
Glad you’re here. Really.

If you’re a startup founder, inventor, or small business owner in Bakersfield, this is for you.

I want to walk through five local resources that can actually help you move forward. Not theory. Real support.

Let’s start.

CSU Bakersfield, Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation

This is a 10-week startup accelerator run through CSUB.
Think boot camp. Fast pace. Long days.

You’ll work on:

  • Your MVP
  • Customer feedback
  • Business planning
  • Marketing and funding basics
  • Legal fundamentals

Quick note from experience:
Before you join any accelerator, protect your idea first.

I tell my inventor clients this all the time.
File a provisional patent before sharing details.
Too many people. Too many conversations. NDAs get messy.

Protection first. Then growth.

SBDC, Small Business Development Center

This one is a gem.

It’s backed by the Small Business Administration and run by people who’ve been there.
Former execs. Operators. Leaders with scars.

They help with:

  • Money and accounting
  • Running day-to-day operations
  • Leadership decisions
  • Funding access

And the price?
Free.

Hard to beat that.

Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce

Yes, the Chamber.

They run a 10-month entrepreneur program with real hands-on work.
Education. Leadership. Building something from scratch.

A lot of programs come with membership perks, and the cost is low.

Fun fact:
Jimmy Ash snacks started here.
Local roots. Real growth.

Kern County Inclusive Entrepreneurship Hub (K-CURRENT)

This is a countywide incubator with:

  • Mentors
  • Co-working space
  • Community programs

I love co-working spaces.

Getting out of the home office matters.
You meet other founders.
You trade ideas.
You help each other without forcing it.

Sometimes you’re ahead.
Sometimes they are.
That mix is powerful.

MESH Cowork, Kern County Builders Exchange

This one is great if you’re in construction or related trades.

It’s built around:

  • Networking
  • Mentorship
  • Industry connections

Two solid startups came out of here:

  • MAVK deal-focused enterprise tools
  • MAGAI growing the local tech scene

Both used MESH as a launch pad.

That’s the list.

If you’re building something in Bakersfield, these places are worth your time.
