Patent Attorney and Founder

Hey everyone! Today’s question: What resources are available for individual inventors?

I’m JD Houvener, founder and patent attorney at Bold Patents Law Firm. For over a decade, I’ve helped inventors secure nearly 500 patents. If you’re an individual inventor, there are some great resources out there to guide you through the process. Let’s go over three key ones.

1. Free Educational Resources
The internet is packed with valuable information for inventors. Here are some go-to sources:

  • Bold Inventor Kit – Click the link below! It’s a great starting point.
  • YouTube & Blogs – Many patent attorneys, inventors, and experts share insights on platforms like YouTube, blogs, and forums.
  • USPTO Website – The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has improved its online resources. They offer guides for beginners and in-depth materials like the MPEP (Manual of Patent Examining Procedure) for those who want to dive deeper.

2. Patent Attorneys
Yes, hiring an attorney costs money, but it’s a smart move. A patent attorney helps you:

  • Determine if your invention is patentable.
  • Understand the potential value of your patent.
  • Avoid common mistakes that could delay or weaken your application.

Having an expert in your corner can save you time, money, and headaches in the long run.

3. Other People – Partners, Investors, and Customers
Once your patent application is filed, it’s time to engage with others. This could mean:

  • Bringing in a business partner or co-inventor.
  • Pitching your idea to investors.
  • Selling your product and getting customer feedback.

Customer feedback is one of the best ways to know if your invention has real market potential. People will tell you straight if they love it or if something needs improvement.

Recap:

  • Learn for free – Use online resources, videos, and official guides.
  • Talk to an attorney – Get expert advice on whether your idea is worth patenting.
  • Engage with others – Test the market, find partners, and get honest feedback.
