Patent Attorney and Founder

Hi, everyone! Today, we’re tackling a big question:

Should you form a company around your invention or license it instead?

I’m JD Houvener, founder and patent attorney at Bold Patents. For over a decade, I’ve helped inventors secure nearly 500 patents. I also wrote Bold Ideas: The Inventor’s Guide to Patents. You can grab your free Bold Inventor Kit using the link below. Pause this video, download it, and come back when you’re ready.

Alright, let’s dive in.

The Core Question
Should you start a business around your invention or license it out? The answer starts with one thing: your passion.

Ask yourself:

  • How excited are you about this idea?
  • Do you feel driven to make it happen, no matter the challenges?

From my experience, about 20% of inventors I’ve worked with have that fire. They’re ready to overcome any obstacle to bring their idea to life. If that sounds like you, starting a business might be the right path.

Starting a Company: The High-Risk, High-Reward Route
Entrepreneurship comes with challenges but also big potential rewards. You’ll need to:

  • Build your brand.
  • Manufacture and market your product.
  • Handle design, funding, and sales.

It’s a lot to take on, but our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Licensing: The Low-Stress, Low-Commitment Option
Not ready to dive into running a business? Licensing can be a great alternative. It’s less risky and works well if:

  • You have a full-time job.
  • Your time or energy is limited.
  • You want a simpler way to monetize your idea.

We’ll help you secure broad, strong patent rights so you can negotiate licensing deals or outright sales with confidence.

Which Option Is Right for You?
If you’re ready to dedicate yourself fully to your invention, start a company. But if you prefer a more hands-off approach, licensing might be your best bet.

Take some time to think about your goals and what’s realistic for you right now.

Thanks for tuning in! I’m JD Hoer with Bold Patents. Whatever path you choose, we’ve got your back. Go big. Go bold.
