How Patents Work

Hi, I’m JD Houvener, founder of Bold Patents Law Firm. I’ve spent years helping inventors get patents. Let’s talk about what they are, how they work, and why they’re useful.

Why Do Patents Matter?

Patents protect your ideas. They stop others from copying what you’ve created. For up to 20 years, you’re the only one allowed to make, use, or sell your invention.

This protection is a big deal, especially if you’re starting a business. Without it, someone could take your idea and profit from your hard work.

How Do You Get a Patent?

To get a patent, your invention has to be:

  • New—no one else has done it before.
  • Non-Obvious—not something people can easily think of.
  • Useful—it must solve a problem or do something helpful.

Think your idea fits? Let’s check. We’ll look into it and see if it’s unique enough to patent.

What Does a Patent Actually Do?

A patent doesn’t let you sell your invention. It gives you the right to stop others from selling it. You’ll need to enforce it yourself—there’s no patent police.

That might mean sending warning letters, getting insurance to cover legal costs, or going to court if needed. We can help with all that.

Why File a Patent?

Patents are about sharing knowledge. You show the world how your invention works, and in return, you get exclusive rights. It’s a way to protect your idea while contributing to progress.
